How to Make the Most Out of Your Security Staff
Hiring the right security services company is something that will clearly impact the safety and security of your organization. Thus, you have to partner with one that is fully committed to upholding your security program and organizational culture.
Consider the following as you try to maximize the benefits offered by your security staff:
Supervision of Security Guards
An effective supervision system for security guards is among the main components you should look for in a security company. Without such, you may end up with guards who lack training and motivation and are thus are unreliable. Random spot checks, guard check-ins and the use of guard tour tracking systems are some of the features of a good guard supervision program.
If you’re dissatisfied with the performance of your existing guards, they more than likely didn’t get adequate prior training. Improve your security workforce first by evaluating the orientation given by your contractor. First of all, did they provide the training on site (in your property)? Who was behind the training and what credentials do they hold? How long was the training for every guard?
In most states, guards have to satisfy certain training requirements before they get a license. Know what these requirements are in your state and make sure that your prospective provider’s guards are in compliance. Besides that, make sure you can personally interview every guard before they are assigned to your property. This interview will help you decide whether the guard is a good fit for your organization. If not, the provider can give you another candidate.
Routine But Unannounced Inspections
Make it a point to stop by your property unannounced from time to time, so you can see how the guards are doing when no one’s looking. If you don’t want to do this yourself, you can hire a third-party security consultant to audit your guards’ performance. However, make sure this consultant is not another security guard company, or you could get biased and thus unreliable results.
Regular Contractor Meetings
One of the best ways to improve the performance of your guards is to meet with your contractor on a regular basis. Such meetings need not be formal though and may even transpire over the telephone. The purpose is just to give your feedback and ask the company what you can do about any weak points.
Choosing the Right Contractor
At the end of the day, your choice of a security service provider can make all the difference. Spend time screening prospects, and consider at least two or three different contractors rather than just one. This gives you options that you can compare so you end up with a wise choice.
